Deep Tissue Massage

This is a brief generalisation and does not claim to represent the different styles, influence and nuance that each practitioner will bring to a session.

Deep tissue massage is a medical massage for a specific problem. It is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Most people go for this type if they have an injury or deep muscle problem.

Deep tissue massages use the same techniques as Swedish massages, with oil, but with a lot more pressure to reach right down to the connective tissue. It will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or "knots" (also known as "adhesions").

You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you. If the pressure is more than you can comfortably take, you might unconsciously tense up, guarding your body from pain. This makes it harder for the therapist to achieve results. Speak to your therapist to ascertain a depth of pressure that works for you. This treatment though intense can be very effective in a short space of time.
